Vine leafhopper

Zygina circumscripta

Description

The Zygina circumscripta is a species of leafhopper belonging to the family Cicadellidae within the order Hemiptera. This pest is a well-known inhabitant of grapevines, often causing significant aesthetic and physiological damage to leaves in various viticultural regions.

The primary host plant for this insect is the grapevine (Vitis vinifera). The leafhoppers typically congregate on the underside of the leaves, where they pierce plant cells to feed on sap. This feeding behavior drains nutrients from the plant and disrupts the plant's metabolic functions, leading to reduced vigor of the entire grapevine.

Regarding its biological cycle, the pest overwinters as adults in leaf litter, debris, or sheltered areas near the vineyard. As temperatures rise in spring, they migrate to the emerging foliage. Depending on climatic conditions, the insect can produce several generations per season, with populations peaking during the warm summer months.

The damage caused by this pest is characterized by distinctive stippling or spotting on the leaf surface. Initially, the leaves appear mottled with light yellow or white specks. Over time, these spots merge, leading to extensive chlorosis. Heavy infestations can result in early leaf senescence and drop, which hampers the ripening of fruit and the hardening of the vine canes.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is crucial for controlling Zygina circumscripta. Cultural practices, such as removing fallen leaves and maintaining weed-free rows, help reduce overwintering sites. Chemical control should be implemented only when necessary, using selective insecticides that minimize harm to beneficial insects and predators found in the vineyard ecosystem.

  • Regular monitoring of foliage for early signs of stippling
  • Maintenance of clean vineyard floors to limit habitat
  • Use of biological control agents and natural predators
  • Application of approved systemic insecticides during peak infestation
