Active ingredient

Citral

Description

Citral (3,7-dimethyl-2,6-octadienal) is a naturally occurring terpenoid aldehyde that serves as a highly effective biopesticide in modern agronomy. Widely recognized for its insecticidal and repellent properties, it plays a vital role in sustainable crop management programs, especially where residue-free production is required.

In terms of agricultural classification, Citral is primarily used as a contact insecticide and acaricide. It acts by disrupting the biological functions of target pests. Furthermore, it exhibits secondary antifungal activity, which helps in preventing the colonization of plant surfaces by certain pathogenic fungal spores, thereby protecting the overall health of the crop.

The mechanism of action involves the chemical disruption of the insect's cuticle and the impairment of their nervous and respiratory systems. Upon contact, the substance causes rapid dehydration and physiological stress in pests like aphids, whiteflies, and spider mites, leading to their elimination within a short period without leaving toxic residues on the produce.

Citral is predominantly used on high-value horticultural crops, including greenhouse vegetables, berries, and ornamental plants. Due to its short environmental half-life, it is an ideal tool for late-stage pest control, allowing farmers to maintain pest-free crops even shortly before harvest without violating safety regulations.

  • Excellent efficacy against soft-bodied pests.
  • No accumulation in soil or groundwater.
  • Minimal impact on non-target beneficial insects if applied correctly.
  • Requires thorough coverage for maximum success.

Regarding safety measures, although Citral is naturally derived, it should be handled with care. Standard protective equipment is recommended to prevent skin and eye irritation. Application should ideally be performed during cooler times of the day to maximize the stability of the active ingredient and ensure its effectiveness on the target surface.
