Bacteriophages against potato soft rot
Description
Bacteriophages against potato soft rot are a specialized class of biological control agents designed to combat pectinolytic bacteria, primarily Pectobacterium and Dickeya species. These viruses function as natural antagonists to specific bacterial pathogens, offering a targeted and environmentally sustainable strategy for protecting potato crops from destructive bacterial soft rot outbreaks.
The mechanism of action is based on the highly specific recognition of bacterial cell surface receptors. Upon contact, the bacteriophage injects its genetic material into the host cell, utilizing the bacterium's metabolic machinery to replicate itself. This cycle culminates in the lysis of the bacterial cell, causing the release of new phage particles that continue to target and eliminate remaining pathogen populations.
These agents are utilized primarily in potato production to prevent field decay and storage losses. Application is recommended during seed tuber treatment, throughout the vegetation period in conditions conducive to disease spread (such as high humidity), and as a pre-storage treatment to minimize the risk of secondary infections and tuber rot during the dormant period.
A key feature of using bacteriophages is their exquisite specificity, which ensures that beneficial soil microflora and the potato plants remain completely unharmed. Unlike broad-spectrum chemicals, they do not disturb the ecological balance of the rhizosphere. However, they are sensitive to environmental factors like high UV radiation and extreme temperatures, necessitating careful timing of application.
Precautions include ensuring that the product is not mixed with incompatible substances such as broad-spectrum disinfectants, copper-based fungicides, or antibiotics, which could compromise the viability of the phages. Farmers should store the biological agent under controlled, cool conditions as specified by the manufacturer to ensure the titer of the active biological units remains effective for field deployment.
