Coumatetralyl
Description
Coumatetralyl is a highly effective active ingredient belonging to the chemical class of 4-hydroxycoumarin derivatives. Unlike herbicides or fungicides, this compound is a potent rodenticide used specifically for the control of rodent populations. It is widely utilized both in agricultural settings to protect storage facilities and in public health sanitation programs.
The mechanism of action of coumatetralyl is based on its anticoagulant properties. Once ingested by a rodent, the substance inhibits the synthesis of vitamin K, which is essential for blood coagulation. This disruption leads to internal hemorrhaging and, consequently, the inevitable death of the pest several days after consumption of the bait.
This substance is used against rats, mice, voles, and other small rodents that pose a threat to crops and stored agricultural products. It is most commonly formulated into ready-to-use food baits, which are placed in areas where pests are most likely to congregate or travel, ensuring effective population control on farms and in grain storage facilities.
The application of coumatetralyl features a cumulative effect. Rodents do not experience immediate poisoning, which prevents the development of bait shyness and encourages pests to consume the bait multiple times until a lethal dose is reached. This makes the preparation highly effective even against rodent populations with high levels of caution.
Safety precautions when handling coumatetralyl require strict adherence to safety protocols. The substance is toxic to warm-blooded animals, so baits must be placed in tamper-resistant bait stations that are inaccessible to livestock, pets, and wildlife. Operators should always use protective gloves and avoid contact with skin and mucous membranes during application.
