Difenacoum
Description
Difenacoum is a highly effective second-generation anticoagulant rodenticide belonging to the hydroxycoumarin chemical class. In agricultural and industrial settings, this substance is used exclusively for the control of various rodent species, including house mice, brown rats, black rats, and voles that cause significant damage to stored grain, seeds, and agricultural infrastructure.
The mechanism of action for Difenacoum involves the inhibition of vitamin K1 recycling in the liver of warm-blooded animals. By blocking the synthesis of essential blood-clotting factors, the active ingredient causes the rodent's blood to lose its ability to coagulate. This leads to internal hemorrhaging, resulting in a delayed death typically occurring several days after the ingestion of the bait.
The product is formulated as ready-to-use baits, which are strategically placed in areas frequented by rodents, such as runways, burrow entrances, and storage perimeter zones. It is particularly valued in professional pest management because it remains highly effective even against rodent populations that have developed resistance to first-generation anticoagulants.
A critical aspect of using Difenacoum is its inherent toxicity to humans and non-target wildlife, which necessitates strict adherence to safety protocols. Baits should always be contained within tamper-resistant bait stations to prevent accidental ingestion by pets, livestock, or domestic animals. Operators must wear appropriate protective clothing, including gloves and respirators, when handling the product.
- High potency requiring only a single feeding session for efficacy.
- Delayed mode of action prevents "bait shyness" in rodent colonies.
- Excellent stability and efficacy in diverse environmental conditions.
- Strict requirement for carcass retrieval to avoid secondary poisoning of scavengers.
All Difenacoum-based formulations must be stored securely in original packaging, away from food, animal feed, and children. In the event of human exposure or accidental poisoning, medical intervention is mandatory. The specific antidote is Vitamin K1 (phytomenadione), administered under professional medical supervision, as the anticoagulant effect can persist for several days.
