Eggshell powder

Eggshell powder is an agricultural input primarily utilized as a mechanical repellent and a soil conditioner. Chemically composed of calcium carbonate, it acts as a sustainable source of calcium, which is essential for plant cell wall development and overall structural integrity in various crop species.

The mechanism of action against pests is entirely physical rather than toxicological. When crushed into sharp-edged fragments, the shell creates an abrasive barrier that is detrimental to gastropods such as slugs and snails. Contact with these sharp particles causes physical irritation and dehydration, preventing the pests from reaching the foliage of vulnerable plants.

It is widely used in vegetable production, particularly for leafy greens, brassicas, and strawberries, which are highly susceptible to mollusks. Beyond its protective properties, the application of eggshell powder helps to neutralize acidic soils. This adjustment of the pH level improves nutrient availability, creating a more favorable environment for plant growth.

Practical application involves the preparation of the shells by cleaning and heating them to eliminate organic residue and pathogens. For field use, the powder or granules are distributed in a ring around the base of the plant. Since its efficacy as a barrier decreases when wet, gardeners often reapply the substance after significant rainfall to maintain the protective perimeter.

Safety precautions are minimal due to the non-toxic nature of the material. However, it is recommended to wear a mask when crushing large quantities of shells to avoid inhaling calcium dust. Growers should also monitor soil pH levels periodically, as excessive use can lead to over-alkalization, which may interfere with the uptake of other essential micronutrients.
