Strychnine
Description
Strychnine is a highly potent alkaloid derived from the seeds of the Strychnos nux-vomica tree. Historically, it has been classified as a powerful rodenticide, primarily employed in agricultural settings to suppress populations of field rodents and pests that compromise crop yields and stored grain integrity.
The mechanism of action for strychnine is neurotoxic. It functions as a competitive antagonist at glycine receptors in the spinal cord and brainstem. By blocking the inhibitory neurotransmitter glycine, the compound induces extreme hyper-excitability of the motor neurons, leading to intense muscular spasms, convulsions, and eventually respiratory failure in the target organisms.
In terms of agricultural application, the substance was typically incorporated into bait formulations distributed in rodent-infested areas or burrow systems. Its rapid speed of action made it a preferred choice for controlling high densities of gophers, ground squirrels, and other small mammals that damage subterranean root systems and agricultural infrastructure.
Currently, the use of strychnine is heavily restricted or entirely prohibited in most agricultural jurisdictions globally. Due to its non-selective nature and high risk to non-target species, including domestic pets, livestock, and endangered wildlife, modern integrated pest management strategies have largely replaced it with anticoagulants and other safer, more targeted control alternatives.
Safety protocols for handling such substances are extremely stringent, requiring comprehensive personal protective equipment (PPE) to prevent accidental ingestion, inhalation, or dermal absorption. Given its extreme toxicity to humans and animals, environmental stewardship and regulatory compliance are essential factors that have led to the cessation of its broad-scale agricultural use.
