Grain screenings

These are by-products of grain cleaning and processing, consisting of undersized, damaged kernels, weed seeds, chaff, and other plant debris.

Также говорят: grain residues, elevator screenings, dockage

Grain screenings are collected during the cleaning process at elevators or processing plants. Depending on their composition and nutritional value, they are classified into different categories for commercial or agricultural use.

They are primarily utilized as a cost-effective ingredient in livestock and poultry feed formulations. Proper inclusion helps balance feed costs, provided the material is processed correctly to eliminate anti-nutritional factors.

A common error is failing to test the screenings for mycotoxins or weed seed content before feeding, which can severely impact animal health. Additionally, storing damp screenings without proper aeration often leads to mold growth, heating, and significant dry matter losses.
