Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Amaranthaceae family and is classified as a late-emerging summer annual weed. It is widely recognized as one of the most troublesome and economically damaging weeds in modern agriculture due to its rapid growth rate and prolific seed production.
This weed frequently infests row crops such as soybeans, corn, and cotton. By outcompeting crops for essential resources including nitrogen, phosphorus, and moisture, Palmer amaranth can significantly reduce harvest yields. Its physical presence often results in severe shading of young crop plants, hindering their development from the start.
The biology of Palmer amaranth is characterized by its extraordinary reproductive capacity. A single female plant can produce hundreds of thousands of seeds, which ensures the weed's persistence in the seed bank for several years.
