Labriform milkweed

Asclepias labriformis

Description

Labriform milkweed (scientific name: Asclepias labriformis) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Apocynaceae family. It is classified as a creeping perennial weed, characterized by an extensive underground root system that allows it to persist even under severe environmental stress and repeated mechanical disturbance.

This species is primarily native to arid environments, such as the rocky soils of Utah. While it is not a major weed in every cropping system, it poses a significant threat to pastures and rangelands. Its presence in agricultural fields often indicates poor soil management or neglected field margins from which it spreads into productive areas.

The biology of Asclepias labriformis is highly adapted to dry conditions. It features upright stems and narrow leaves. Like other members of the milkweed genus, it produces wind-dispersed seeds equipped with silky hairs. The most distinct biological feature, however, is its chemical profile, which includes toxic cardiac glycosides that remain active even in dried plant tissue.

The primary economic damage caused by this weed is the poisoning of livestock. It is considered a toxic plant for cattle and sheep, leading to mortality and reduced livestock health. Beyond its toxicity, it competes aggressively with forage crops for moisture and minerals, reducing the overall biomass and nutritional quality of pastures.

Control strategies for labriform milkweed require persistence. Agronomic practices focus on maintaining healthy crop cover to suppress growth and frequent mechanical mowing before seed set to prevent spread. Chemical control remains the most effective approach for large infestations. Use of systemic herbicides, such as glyphosate or specific phenoxy herbicides, applied during the bud stage, provides the best translocation into the root system, which is critical for long-term eradication.
