Scarlet spiderling (Boerhavia coccinea) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Nyctaginaceae family. Known for its persistent growth habit, it is considered a significant weed in tropical and subtropical agriculture. The plant is characterized by its trailing or ascending stems and a deep, thick taproot that makes manual removal difficult.

This weed is commonly found in row crops, vegetable fields, pastures, and disturbed land areas. It poses a substantial threat to crops like cotton, soybeans, maize, and various legumes. By forming dense mats, it effectively outcompetes young crops for sunlight and soil nutrients, leading to significant yield losses if left uncontrolled during the early stages of crop development.

The biology of Boerhavia coccinea is driven by its efficient reproductive strategies. The plant produces small, sticky fruits that adhere to clothing, animals, and agricultural machinery, facilitating rapid dispersal across farms. Furthermore, its ability to regenerate from small fragments of root stock allows it to survive mechanical cultivation attempts, often leading to a denser infestation post-tillage.

Its harmful impact is multi-faceted. Beyond direct competition for resources, the scarlet spiderling serves as an alternative host for various plant viruses and nematodes, which can then migrate to economic crops. The presence of the weed also increases the moisture content in the harvesting zone, which can lead to quality degradation of the harvested produce.

Cultural practices include deep plowing to expose and desiccate roots, combined with prompt removal of seedlings before they develop a significant root system.
