Brazilian waterweed

Egeria densa

Description

Brazilian waterweed (Egeria densa) is a perennial aquatic plant belonging to the Hydrocharitaceae family. Often confused with Canadian waterweed, this species is significantly more robust and aggressive, forming dense, impenetrable underwater mats that cause severe disruption to freshwater ecosystems and agricultural water supply infrastructure.

Originating from South America, the plant has become a global invasive species. It thrives in stagnant or slow-moving waters, such as ponds, drainage ditches, and irrigation canals. Its ability to adapt to varying nutrient levels and light conditions makes it a persistent challenge for land and water management professionals.

The biology of Egeria densa is driven by its exceptional vegetative propagation. The plant grows from stem fragments; even the smallest piece containing a node can develop into a new colony. In favorable conditions, it can grow several centimeters per day, rapidly colonizing the entire water column and displacing native aquatic flora.

The impact of this weed is primarily mechanical and ecological. Dense stands obstruct water flow in irrigation channels, hindering the delivery of water to fields and damaging irrigation machinery. Furthermore, the massive accumulation of organic matter as the plant dies off leads to eutrophication and oxygen depletion, which severely impacts fish populations and aquatic biodiversity.

Effective control strategies for Brazilian waterweed include:

  • Mechanical harvesting using specialized aquatic weed cutters, ensuring the complete removal of all debris to prevent spread.
  • Biological control through the introduction of herbivorous fish species, such as grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), which graze on the foliage.
  • Drawdown management: lowering the water level during winter to allow freezing or desiccation of the plants in shallow areas.
  • Chemical control using aquatic-approved herbicides, provided they comply with local environmental regulations and water safety standards.
