Fat duckweed (Lemna gibba) is a small, free-floating aquatic plant belonging to the Araceae family. It consists of minute, leaf-like fronds that float on the water surface. The species is distinct due to its swollen, gibbous underside, which is filled with air pockets (aerenchyma), allowing the plant to remain buoyant and stable in various water conditions.

This species is commonly found in stagnant or slow-moving freshwater environments, including ponds, irrigation canals, and drainage ditches. It thrives in nutrient-rich water, often blooming in areas with high nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations. Its ability to colonize large areas rapidly makes it a significant issue in water management.

The biology of Lemna gibba is characterized by extremely rapid vegetative reproduction. Fronds divide continuously, often creating dense, mat-like colonies that can cover entire surfaces of water bodies within weeks. This growth pattern significantly alters the aquatic ecosystem by blocking light penetration, which inhibits the growth of submerged aquatic plants.

The weed’s impact on agriculture is primarily linked to the blockage of irrigation systems and water supply channels. By restricting water flow, it hinders the delivery of water to crops, particularly in paddy fields. Furthermore, dense mats interfere with the operation of pumps and intake valves, increasing the cost of maintenance and operation for irrigation infrastructure.

Effective management strategies for fat duckweed involve a combination of approaches. Physical control involves the manual or mechanical removal of the plant mats using nets or harvesters. Chemical control involves the application of aquatic-labeled herbicides, such as diquat or glyphosate-based products, though environmental impacts must be considered. Furthermore, reducing nutrient runoff into water bodies is essential for long-term population suppression.
