Water horehound

Water horehound (genus Lycopus) refers to perennial herbaceous plants belonging to the Lamiaceae family. These rhizomatous perennials are often classified as persistent weeds that thrive in moist, waterlogged environments.

The plant is commonly found in floodplains, along riverbanks, on wet meadows, and in marshy areas. In agriculture, water horehound becomes a significant issue when crops are grown on drained peatlands or lowland areas with high water tables. It can heavily infest crops such as rice, cereals, and row crops that require or grow in conditions of excessive soil moisture.

Biologically, water horehound is characterized by a robust network of underground rhizomes, which allow for rapid vegetative propagation. The plant exhibits high ecological adaptability, quickly colonizing open areas and forming dense patches. The flowering period occurs in mid-summer, followed by the production of numerous seeds that can remain viable in the soil for several years.

The weed's harmfulness lies in its ability to compete aggressively with crops for essential nutrients, water, and sunlight. Due to the high density of growth, water horehound significantly suppresses crop development, lowers yield quality, and hinders mechanized harvesting operations. Furthermore, the presence of the weed in a field can create favorable conditions for various pathogens and pests.

Control measures require an integrated approach. Agrotechnical methods include deep autumn plowing, land drainage improvements, and proper crop rotation. Chemical control involves the use of systemic herbicides effective against perennial rhizomatous weeds during active growth stages. Key strategies include:

• Deep tillage to mechanically damage the rhizome system.
• Effective water management in fields to reduce soil saturation.
• Application of glyphosate-based herbicides in fallow fields.
• Use of selective herbicides during the crop growing season.
