Skunkweed

Skunkweed (Navarretia squarrosa) is an annual herbaceous weed belonging to the Polemoniaceae family. It is recognized as a significant weed in various habitats, often identified by its unpleasant, skunk-like odor and its sharp, spiny bracts. Due to these characteristics, it is often avoided by grazing animals and presents a physical challenge to farmers during harvest.

Originally native to western North America, Skunkweed has established itself as an invasive species in various parts of the world. It thrives in open, disturbed soils, frequently invading grain fields, pastures, and roadsides. Its ability to tolerate dry conditions allows it to successfully outcompete native or cultivated plants in nutrient-poor or compacted soils.
