Tropical pokeweed (Phytolacca icosandra) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Phytolaccaceae family. Classified as a deep-rooted perennial weed, it possesses a fleshy, tuberous root system that allows it to survive extreme conditions and regenerate effectively if the aerial parts are simply mowed or broken.
It is predominantly found in tropical and subtropical regions but has successfully expanded its range into temperate areas as an invasive species. It frequently infests cultivated fields, orchards, and vineyards, where it exploits nutrient-rich soil and competes directly with crop plants for water, sunlight, and soil fertility.
The biology of this weed is characterized by rapid vegetative growth and high reproductive potential. Each plant produces numerous racemes of small berries, leading to massive seed dispersal by birds and water runoff. The seeds can remain viable in the soil seed bank for extended periods, making infestation management a multi-year effort for farmers.
