Common butterwort

Common butterwort (Pinguicula vulgaris) is a perennial carnivorous plant belonging to the Lentibulariaceae family. In agricultural settings, it can act as a weed on waterlogged soils, moist meadows, and pastures where drainage is suboptimal. It is recognized by its basal rosette of sticky, gland-covered leaves that trap small insects.

Botanically, it is a hygrophilous plant. It thrives in habitats with high water tables, such as boggy fields or depressions within pastures. Its ability to extract nitrogen from insects allows it to survive in nutrient-poor, wet soils where other more productive forage species might struggle to establish initially.

The economic impact of the common butterwort is primarily associated with the degradation of pasture quality. By occupying wet patches of land, it competes with more palatable grasses and legumes. While it rarely becomes a dominant weed in high-yield grain fields, it can significantly reduce the nutritional value and biomass production of low-lying hay meadows.

Agronomic control is centered on hydrological management. Improving field drainage is the most effective way to eliminate this weed, as it forces the soil to dry out, making the environment unsuitable for the butterwort's survival. Additionally, consistent mowing practices can weaken the population over time by preventing the plants from completing their reproductive cycle.
