Swamp smartweed (Polygonum coccineum) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Polygonaceae family. It is classified as a rhizomatous perennial weed, characterized by its ability to spread vigorously through underground stems. This plant is well-adapted to aquatic and semi-aquatic habitats, making it a persistent nuisance in agricultural settings that feature high soil moisture levels.

This weed is typically found in wetlands, marshy areas, and irrigation ditches. However, it frequently encroaches into agricultural fields, particularly in low-lying areas or poorly drained soils. When it establishes in crop fields, such as cereals or row crops, it can rapidly colonize space, creating dense mats that displace domestic vegetation.

This allows the plant to survive harsh winter conditions and quickly sprout during the growing season.
