Pickerelweed (Pontederia cordata) is a perennial aquatic plant belonging to the Pontederiaceae family. Primarily found in wetlands, ponds, and shallow areas of slow-moving water, it acts as an invasive weed in agricultural contexts. Its rapid growth and robust root structure make it a significant concern for those managing water resources in irrigated farming regions.

Originally native to the Americas, this plant has spread to various regions, often colonizing irrigation canals, drainage ditches, and rice fields. Its presence is detrimental to hydraulic efficiency, as dense stands can significantly impede water flow. In agriculture, this obstruction can lead to inadequate water supply for irrigation, directly impacting crop yields and operational costs.

The biology of Pontederia cordata is defined by its strong rhizomatous root system, which anchors it firmly in the sediment. It produces heart-shaped leaves and tall spikes of blue flowers.
