This plant is known for its ability to thrive in base-rich waters, forming extensive mats of vegetation that can cover large surfaces of irrigation channels and agricultural drainage ditches.
It is primarily found in wetland areas and man-made water management systems. In an agricultural context, it acts as a significant weed in rice paddies and irrigation infrastructure. By colonizing water supply networks, it interferes with hydraulic functions, leading to water stagnation and reduced efficiency in irrigation management.
The biology of Potamogeton coloratus is characterized by robust vegetative growth and efficient reproduction. It spreads through rhizomes and fragmented stems, allowing it to colonize new segments of water systems rapidly.
