Description
Silverweed (Potentilla anserina) belongs to the Rose family (Rosaceae). It is a perennial herbaceous plant with creeping overground runners that take root at the nodes, forming dense mats. The plant is characterized by high adaptability to various soil types and climatic conditions, making it a very dangerous weed in agro-ecosystems.
It is found everywhere in meadows, pastures, along roadsides, and in damp areas of fields. Silverweed causes the greatest damage in cereal crops, row crops, and forage lands. It is capable of rapidly occupying open areas, displacing cultivated plants due to active vegetative propagation and the creation of a dense carpet that prevents the growth of seedlings.
The biology of the weed is characterized by exceptional viability. It propagates by seeds and vegetatively via long creeping runners. Flowering begins in May and can continue until the end of summer. The root system penetrates to a significant depth, which complicates the mechanical removal of the plant from the soil during standard tillage.
The harmfulness of silverweed lies in a significant reduction in crop yields. It is a strong competitor for moisture, nutrients, and sunlight. In addition, the presence of this weed in pastures can reduce feed quality, and mass distribution in fields complicates harvesting operations and initial grain processing.
To control silverweed, a complex approach is used.
- Thorough autumn plowing with furrow inversion.
- Regular disking to deplete the root system.
- Timely application of systemic herbicides containing glyphosate or specific growth regulators.
- Drainage of waterlogged areas, as the weed prefers damp soils.
