The plant is typically found in shallow water bodies, saline lagoons, and irrigated channels. In an agronomic context, Southern ditchgrass poses a significant threat to rice paddies. It actively colonizes rice fields, especially during the initial stages of crop development, where the presence of standing water provides ideal conditions for rapid growth and spread.
