Tall meadow-rue

Tall meadow-rue (Thalictrum pubescens) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Ranunculaceae family. While it is often appreciated in natural landscapes, it is considered a persistent and troublesome weed in agricultural settings. Its preference for moist, nutrient-rich soil makes it a frequent invader of poorly drained agricultural lands and low-lying field sections.

This weed frequently impacts crops in areas characterized by high soil moisture levels, such as floodplains or fields near natural waterways. Once established, it can easily migrate from adjacent wild habitats into crop rows, where its robust growth habit allows it to outcompete standard cereal and vegetable crops. The biology of Thalictrum pubescens is driven by a deep, expansive rhizome system that stores carbohydrates, allowing the plant to sprout repeatedly throughout the growing season. It thrives in various environmental conditions and can reproduce both sexually via wind-dispersed seeds and vegetatively via rhizome fragments, complicating eradication efforts significantly.

Tall meadow-rue acts as a significant drain on soil nutrients and water, directly limiting the yield potential of the primary crop. Furthermore, its ability to grow tall and dense creates a canopy that shades out surrounding crops, leading to weak stalks and reduced photosynthetic capacity, which ultimately hurts final harvest quality.
