Description
Gattinger's false foxglove (Agalinis gattingeri) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the broomrape family, Orobanchaceae. As a hemiparasite, it possesses green foliage capable of photosynthesis, yet it derives a significant portion of its essential nutrients and water from the root systems of nearby host plants, primarily grasses, via specialized structures called haustoria.
The native range of this species is centered in the interior of North America, extending across parts of the United States and southern Canada. It is primarily found in distinct ecological habitats, specifically dry, calcareous prairies, barrens, and alvar pavements. Because it is highly specialized, its distribution is often localized and fragmented, making it a target for conservation efforts.
Morphologically, the plant is characterized by a slender, branching stem reaching 10–40 cm in height, with opposite, linear leaves. The most striking features are its bell-shaped flowers, which range from pink to lavender and often exhibit deep purple spots or yellow lines within the throat. These blooms typically emerge in late summer, timing their peak activity with local insect populations.
Cultivation requirements for this species are complex and not suitable for conventional agriculture. Successful growth depends on the availability of appropriate host grasses and low-nutrient, well-drained, alkaline soils. It is highly intolerant of shade and competition from dense, aggressive vegetation, which is why it thrives in frequently disturbed or nutrient-poor environments where host grasses are accessible.
Pests and pathogens are less documented for this species compared to commercial crops, though it is susceptible to general root pathogens that affect prairie plants and environmental stressors. The greatest threats to Agalinis gattingeri are the loss of high-quality grassland habitat, the suppression of natural fire regimes that prevent scrub encroachment, and the misuse of herbicides that inadvertently eliminate the necessary host plants required for its survival.
