The American dwarf birch (Betula pumila L.) is a small, deciduous shrub belonging to the Betulaceae family. Unlike its taller relatives, this species typically grows as a multi-stemmed, sprawling bush, rarely exceeding two meters in height. It is a highly specialized plant that thrives in environments where other shrubs struggle to survive.
Native to North America, this species is most commonly found in wetlands, peatlands, and the fringes of cold northern lakes. Its natural range demonstrates a remarkable resilience to harsh winters and acidic, waterlogged substrates. These traits have made it an interesting candidate for specialized horticultural projects and bog gardens.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by its rounded to obovate leaves with serrated margins and often puberulent (downy) young twigs. While it prefers full sun, the plant requires consistent moisture; it does not tolerate long periods of drought, which can lead to rapid wilting and leaf drop.

Regarding pests and diseases, it is susceptible to typical birch issues, such as leaf miners, aphids, and rust fungi.
