The plant originates from arctic and alpine regions, characterized by extreme climatic conditions. Its natural distribution is restricted to rocky outcrops, cliffs, and crevices in high-mountain ranges where moisture is present but soil development is minimal. It is evolutionary adapted to survive deep freezes and intermittent sunlight.
