Andreaea mutabilis is a distinctive species of acrocarpous moss belonging to the family Andreaeaceae. Unlike conventional field crops, this species is not cultivated for agricultural production; however, it serves as a significant biological component in various alpine and arctic ecosystems, contributing to the stability of rocky environments.

The plant originates from harsh climatic zones, predominantly inhabiting alpine regions and high-latitude landscapes. Its natural habitat consists of exposed rock surfaces, such as granite and other silicate substrates. These areas provide the necessary conditions for the moss to thrive, where it often acts as a pioneer species in colonizing barren, rocky terrain.

Botanically, this species is characterized by the formation of dense, often blackish or dark-brown tufts. The sporophyte structure is unique, featuring a capsule that opens via four longitudinal slits, a trait common to the Andreaeaceae family.
