Big Bluestem (Andropogon gerardii) is a prominent perennial grass species within the Poaceae family. Widely recognized as the iconic grass of the North American tallgrass prairie, it is highly valued in modern agriculture for its exceptional biomass production and hardiness. Its scientific name honours the botanist Louis Gerard, reflecting its long history of botanical study.

Native to central and eastern North America, Big Bluestem has adapted to a wide range of ecological conditions. It is increasingly cultivated globally as an alternative forage crop and a source of renewable energy. Its ability to thrive in diverse environments, from rich prairie soils to thinner, rocky substrates, makes it a versatile choice for agricultural diversification.

The plant is characterized by its tall, sturdy culms that can reach heights of 1.5 to 2.5 meters. The inflorescence is unique, typically divided into three finger-like racemes, which gives rise to its alternative common name, "turkey foot." The root system is deep and fibrous, often extending several feet into the soil, which allows the plant to access moisture during periods of drought.

In terms of agronomy, Big Bluestem requires full sun and well-drained soil to achieve its full potential. While it exhibits great tolerance to soil acidity and low fertility, it responds positively to nitrogen applications. Establishing a stand requires clean seedbed preparation and patience, as the seedlings are relatively slow to develop in their first season compared to introduced forage grasses.
