Description
Broomsedge bluestem (lat. Andropogon virginicus L.) is a perennial grass species belonging to the Poaceae family. In agronomy, it is recognized as a persistent, bunch-forming grass that is highly adapted to nutrient-poor soils and various environmental stressors, making it a common species in unmanaged or disturbed ecosystems.
The species is native to North America, where it thrives across a wide range of climatic zones. Its natural distribution is primarily found in old fields, open woodlands, and cleared pastures. Due to its evolutionary success, it has become a dominant species in many early-successional plant communities across the Eastern and Central United States.
Botanically, the plant grows in dense clumps or tufts with stems reaching up to 1.2 meters. A distinctive feature is the change in leaf color throughout the seasons, shifting from green to a vivid copper-orange during late autumn and winter.
