In its native habitat, it can exceed 80 meters in height, serving as a critical component of the canopy layer.

Originating from the mountain rainforests of New Guinea, this species has been introduced to various tropical regions for commercial reforestation. It thrives at elevations between 500 and 2000 meters, preferring areas with high rainfall and consistent warmth. It is highly valued not only for its timber but also for its capacity to restore forest cover in degraded highland areas.

Botanically, Araucaria hunsteinii is distinct for its sharp, needle-like foliage that varies in texture depending on the tree's age. The bark is typically thin and peels in horizontal strips. As a light-demanding species, early-stage management involves careful thinning to ensure that juvenile trees receive sufficient sunlight. It is not suitable for frost-prone areas, as it lacks the physiological adaptations to survive even brief cold snaps, making site selection a primary concern for foresters.
