Unlike traditional crops, this species is considered a forest pathogen that negatively impacts conifer growth. It derives its nutrition entirely from the host tree through specialized root-like structures called haustoria.
The native range of this species is primarily focused in western North America. It thrives in diverse forest environments where its host trees, typically pine and fir species, are abundant. Because it is an obligate parasite, its geographic distribution is strictly limited by the presence of susceptible coniferous vegetation.
Botanically, this plant is characterized by small, inconspicuous shoots that emerge from the host bark. One of its most distinctive features is the explosive seed dispersal mechanism, which allows the parasite to spread its offspring rapidly across the canopy.
