Arceuthobium cyanocarpum, commonly known as the pine dwarf mistletoe, is a parasitic plant belonging to the Santalaceae family. As an obligate parasite, it relies entirely on its host trees, primarily species of pine, for water and essential mineral nutrients, severely impacting the health of forest ecosystems.

The origin of this species is linked to the high-elevation coniferous forests of North America. It is not an agricultural crop in the traditional sense, but it is of significant interest to foresters and botanists who study its distribution across mountain ranges where its host trees naturally occur.

Botanically, it is characterized by its small, leafless, and jointed stems. It produces distinct blue-green berries—hence the name "cyanocarpum"—which play a vital role in its propagation. When the berries reach maturity, they develop high internal pressure and explosively discharge seeds, allowing them to travel several meters to infect nearby branches or trees.

Regarding climate and habitat, it thrives in the subalpine zones. It has adapted to survive in temperate mountain climates where coniferous hosts are prevalent. From a management perspective, there is no cultivation technique; instead, foresters employ strategies to mitigate its spread, such as silvicultural thinning and the removal of heavily infested trees.

The parasite interferes with the tree's physiological processes, leading to stunted growth, reduced reproduction, and increased susceptibility to secondary forest pests and fungal pathogens, often resulting in widespread canopy decline.
