Jade plant

The Jade plant (Crassula ovata) is a popular succulent perennial belonging to the Crassulaceae family. It is recognized as an agricultural and horticultural crop for its high durability, succulent foliage capable of storing significant water reserves, and its slow but steady growth habit, which makes it ideal for nursery production.

Native to South Africa, specifically the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces, the plant thrives in rocky, well-drained soils in scrubland environments. Today, its cultivation spans globally, primarily serving the indoor plant market, though it is also utilized in xeriscaping and landscape design in arid and semi-arid regions with mild winter climates.

Botanically, Crassula ovata is characterized by its thick, woody stems and fleshy, ovate leaves that grow in opposite pairs. Under optimal light conditions, the margins of the leaves often develop a distinct reddish hue. The plant can reach significant heights as a shrub and produces small, star-shaped white or pale pink flowers, usually appearing during the cooler months when day length is shortened.

Successful agrotechnics for the Jade plant center on substrate composition and irrigation management. The soil must be gritty and porous to prevent root rot, which is the most frequent cause of crop failure. The plant requires bright, indirect light; excessive shade causes legginess, while direct, harsh sunlight can lead to leaf scorching. Management of typical diseases and pests is essential for crop quality. Root rot, caused by overwatering and fungal pathogens like Phytophthora, is the primary disease threat.
