Bermuda grass

Bermuda grass (Latin: Cynodon dactylon) is a perennial, warm-season grass belonging to the Poaceae family. It is widely recognized as one of the most important forage and turf grasses globally, valued for its exceptional ability to withstand heat, drought, and heavy traffic.

Originating from tropical and subtropical regions of the Old World, Bermuda grass has successfully naturalized across various continents. Its range spans from Mediterranean climates to tropical zones, where it is highly prized for its rapid growth rate and ability to colonize areas where other grasses struggle to survive.

Botanically, it is characterized by a dense growth habit, utilizing both rhizomes (underground stems) and stolons (above-ground creeping stems) to spread. The leaves are typically fine-textured and blue-green, while the inflorescence consists of a characteristic cluster of three to seven spikes arranged like a finger, which gives the plant its distinct appearance.

Agronomically, Bermuda grass demands high levels of sunlight and fertile, well-draining soil. While it is incredibly hardy, it performs best under systematic management, including regular nitrogen fertilization and irrigation during the peak growing season. It exhibits remarkable tolerance to saline conditions, making it suitable for coastal areas and saline-alkali soil reclamation.

The agricultural and commercial utility of Bermuda grass is extensive:

Regarding pest and disease management, the crop is generally resilient. However, it can be susceptible to fungal diseases like leaf spot or dollar spot, especially under conditions of high humidity and poor air circulation. Controlling soil-borne nematodes and regular monitoring for aphids are standard practices in maintaining a healthy, high-yielding stand of this productive grass.
