Bermuda grass (lat. Cynodon dactylon) is a perennial grass species belonging to the Poaceae family. It is widely recognized in agriculture for its exceptional persistence, rapid vegetative growth, and tolerance to intensive grazing, making it a staple forage crop in tropical and subtropical regions across the globe.

Originating from East Africa, this grass has become naturalized in numerous regions with warm climates. Its ability to adapt to diverse environments has enabled it to spread across Southern Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Americas, where it is extensively used both for livestock feed and as a durable ground cover for various landscapes.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by a vigorous root system consisting of underground rhizomes and above-ground creeping stolons that root at the nodes. The leaves are typically grey-green, flat, and pointed. Its inflorescence is distinct, consisting of a cluster of three to seven spikes radiating from a single point, resembling a finger-like structure.

Bermuda grass thrives in full sunlight and demonstrates remarkable drought, heat, and salinity tolerance. While it prefers fertile, well-drained loamy soils, it is capable of persisting in a wide range of soil textures, including heavy clays. For optimal forage production, it requires consistent nitrogen fertilization and sufficient moisture during the active growing season.

Common agricultural and economic applications include:

  • Establishment of high-traffic, durable grazing pastures for cattle, sheep, and horses.
  • Production of hay, which offers high nutritional value when harvested at the appropriate growth stage.

Despite its robustness, Bermuda grass can be susceptible to diseases such as leaf spot, rust, and various fungal root rots, particularly under conditions of poor drainage. Common pests include wireworms and white grubs, which feed on the root system. Integrated pest management, proper nitrogen management, and strategic mowing schedules are essential to maintain stand density and productivity over multiple years.
