Pink Ivory

Pink Ivory (botanical name: Berchemia zeyheri) is a distinctive tree species belonging to the Rhamnaceae family. Famous globally among woodworkers for its rare, vibrant pink-to-red timber, this tree is native to the southern regions of Africa, including South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Botswana.

In its natural habitat, the tree typically grows in woodland areas and rocky mountain slopes. It is known for its slow growth rate, which contributes to the incredible density and fine texture of its wood, often categorized as one of the most expensive and precious timbers available for fine cabinetry.

Botanically, Berchemia zeyheri is a deciduous tree with a rounded crown. The leaves are simple, elliptical, and display a characteristic venation pattern. The tree produces small, inconspicuous greenish-yellow flowers, followed by edible, oval-shaped drupes that turn a reddish hue when fully mature, providing a food source for local wildlife.

Regarding cultivation, Pink Ivory requires well-drained, fertile soil and plenty of sunlight. It is sensitive to waterlogged conditions, making proper soil drainage a top priority for nursery management. While it is hardy in its native subtropical environment, it requires protection from severe frost if introduced to cooler temperate zones.
