Red lungwort

Red lungwort (lat. Pulmonaria rubra) is a robust herbaceous perennial belonging to the Borage family (Boraginaceae). It is highly regarded by gardeners for its early spring blooms and its capacity to form dense, lush ground cover in shaded environments, making it an excellent candidate for woodland gardens.

The plant originates from the mountain forests of Central and Eastern Europe, particularly the Carpathian Mountains. Over time, it has been adopted by gardeners worldwide as an ornamental plant, valued for its hardiness, minimal maintenance requirements, and ability to thrive in various temperate climates.

Botanically, it is characterized by its large, elongated, light green foliage which typically lacks the white spotting seen in other species of the genus. Its flowers are distinctively brick-red, providing a vivid splash of color early in the spring season, often emerging just as the last frosts begin to thaw.

Regarding cultivation requirements, red lungwort prefers moist, fertile, and well-drained soil. It excels in partial to full shade, as intense sunlight can cause leaf scorch and dehydration. Successful agrotechnology involves consistent watering during dry spells and applying organic mulch annually to maintain soil moisture and fertility.

While generally hardy, the plant can occasionally suffer from powdery mildew if air circulation is poor or if the site is excessively damp. Integrated pest management, such as thinning out plantings to improve airflow and monitoring for slugs during wet weather, is usually sufficient to maintain a healthy and vigorous stand of red lungwort.
