Soft lungwort

Soft lungwort (лат. Pulmonaria mollis) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Boraginaceae family. It is distinguished by its dense, soft hair covering, which gives the plant a distinct grayish-green appearance. This species is highly valued both as an early spring honey plant and as an ornamental addition to shade-loving gardens.

The plant is native to the temperate regions of Europe and Western Siberia. Its natural habitat includes light forests, forest edges, and meadow slopes. Pulmonaria mollis thrives in climates with moderate humidity and prefers nutrient-rich, moist, but well-draining soils. It is well-adapted to the seasonal changes typical of its native range.

Botanically, it features a rosette of basal leaves and a cluster of flowers that shift in color from pink to blue as the pH level in the petals changes. Cultivation requirements involve providing partial shade, as intense direct sunlight can scorch the leaves. Watering should be consistent, especially during the spring growth phase. While the plant is quite hardy, mulching with leaf mold or compost is recommended to maintain soil moisture and provide essential nutrients throughout the growing season.
