The plant is native to eastern North America, where it thrives in varied temperate environments. It is commercially cultivated for its unique flavor and high content of bioactive compounds, including anthocyanins and ellagic acid. The growth habit involves biennial canes that arise from a perennial root system, requiring specific pruning techniques to optimize berry production.
