Description

Boschniakia hookeri is a highly specialized parasitic plant belonging to the Orobanchaceae family. Unlike typical agricultural crops, this species is holoparasitic, meaning it lacks chlorophyll and cannot perform photosynthesis. It derives all its essential nutrients and water directly from the root systems of its host plants.

The native range of this plant is restricted to the western coast of North America, stretching from Alaska down to California. It primarily inhabits coniferous forests and coastal scrub ecosystems, where it establishes biological connections with the roots of specific host shrubs, most notably members of the Arctostaphylos (manzanita) and Gaultheria (salal) genera.

From a botanical standpoint, the plant is characterized by a fleshy, reddish-brown stem that emerges directly from the host's underground structures. Only the inflorescences are visible above ground, appearing as dense, cone-like spikes ranging from 5 to 15 centimeters in height. The true leaves are absent, replaced by scale-like structures along the floral stem.
