Unlike conventional crops, this plant lacks chlorophyll entirely and relies exclusively on the root systems of host plants, such as alders and willows, to obtain essential nutrients and carbohydrates.

The distribution range of this species covers the boreal forests of Eurasia and North America. It is commonly found in regions like the Russian Far East, Siberia, Alaska, and parts of Canada.
