Northern groundcone, known scientifically as Boschniakia rossica, is a fascinating perennial parasitic plant belonging to the Orobanchaceae family. Unlike conventional crops, this plant lacks chlorophyll entirely and relies exclusively on the root systems of host plants, such as alders and willows, to obtain essential nutrients and carbohydrates.

The distribution range of this species covers the boreal forests of Eurasia and North America. It is commonly found in regions like the Russian Far East, Siberia, Alaska, and parts of Canada. The plant thrives in cold, wet environments, typically inhabiting areas where its primary hosts grow in abundance, forming a specific ecological niche in the northern wilderness.

Botanically, the plant presents a sturdy, succulent stem covered with overlapping brownish or purple scales. Reaching up to 40 centimeters in height, it produces a spike-like inflorescence of densely packed, dark-colored flowers. The plant's appearance is striking, often emerging from the forest floor resembling a pine cone or a thick, fleshy spike.

There is no industrial agronomy associated with Boschniakia rossica, as it is not a commercially cultivated crop. Requirements for growth are strictly biological: the presence of a compatible host plant and a specific soil climate that supports the host's root system.
