The rattlesnake fern (Botrychium virginianum) is a perennial spore-bearing plant belonging to the Ophioglossaceae family. Unlike conventional field crops, this fern is a woodland inhabitant with a highly specialized biological structure that has evolved over millions of years to thrive in stable, forest-dominated environments.
The native range of this species covers much of the Northern Hemisphere, spanning North America, Europe, and parts of Asia. It primarily flourishes in moist, rich, deciduous forests where the canopy provides the necessary shade and the leaf litter ensures a constant supply of organic matter for the complex root systems it develops underground.
