Bruguiera cylindrica, commonly known as the small-leafed mangrove, is a tree species belonging to the family Rhizophoraceae. It is a vital component of the mangrove forest ecosystem, uniquely adapted to survive in saline environments and intertidal zones where other plant species struggle to grow.
The native range of this species spans across the coastal areas of the Indo-Pacific region, including parts of India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Indonesia. It thrives in muddy, saline habitats near estuaries, forming dense thickets that serve as critical nurseries for various marine and terrestrial organisms.
Botanically, the tree exhibits remarkable adaptations such as knee-like pneumatophores (breathing roots) that rise above the substrate to facilitate gas exchange. The leaves are smooth, ovate, and opposite, while the flowers are characteristically greenish-white. The species is viviparous, meaning its seeds germinate while still attached to the parent tree.
Agronomic management is restricted to conservation and restoration ecology. Because the tree is highly specialized to tidal dynamics, it requires specific salinity levels, water temperature, and sediment composition for successful growth. Efforts to cultivate the plant focus on coastal afforestation projects to restore mangrove biodiversity.
Economically, Bruguiera cylindrica is valued for its hard and durable timber, which is frequently used for building poles, construction, and high-quality fuel. Additionally, the bark is a traditional source of tannin for leather processing, and various plant parts are utilized in local ethnomedicine to treat skin ailments and inflammation.
