Bruguiera parviflora is a significant tree species within the Rhizophoraceae family, known for its essential role in mangrove forests. This evergreen tree is highly specialized, having evolved to thrive in intertidal zones characterized by saline water, high temperatures, and anaerobic soil conditions.

The native range of this species extends across the tropical Indo-Pacific region, including Southeast Asia, India, and Northern Australia. It is frequently found in estuarine areas and coastal swamps, where it acts as a primary stabilizer of sediment and a critical habitat for diverse marine and coastal wildlife.

Botanically, the tree is distinguished by its knee-like pneumatophores, which allow the plant to respire in oxygen-poor mud. The leaves are smooth, ovate, and leathery, providing resistance to water loss. Like other members of its genus, it exhibits vivipary, where seeds germinate while still attached to the parent tree, producing propagules that drop and plant themselves into the soft substrate.

The ecological requirements are strict: the species thrives in nutrient-rich silt or clay soils with regular tidal inundation. It does not tolerate freshwater saturation for long periods without saline influence. In management practices, such as mangrove reforestation, the planting of mature propagules during the correct seasonal tide is essential for ensuring survival and successful establishment.

Economic and utility applications are localized but valuable. The timber is prized for its high density and resilience to saltwater, often utilized for heavy construction, piling, and firewood. The bark contains high concentrations of tannins used in traditional leather tanning. Typical threats to the species include over-harvesting, habitat destruction, and herbivory by specialized crabs that target the propagules, as well as fungal infections that can occur if the water quality is severely degraded.
