Buffel grass (scientific name Cenchrus pennisetiformis) is a perennial grass species belonging to the Poaceae family. It is widely recognized as one of the most significant forage crops in arid and semi-arid regions due to its remarkable ability to tolerate extreme heat and prolonged periods of drought.
Originally native to parts of Africa and the Middle East, this grass has been introduced to many tropical and subtropical regions around the globe. Its aggressive colonization ability and survival mechanisms have made it a preferred choice for land rehabilitation and the improvement of degraded rangelands in dry zones.
The plant exhibits a bunch-forming growth habit with vigorous tillering. Its height varies depending on moisture availability, typically ranging from 50 to 100 cm. The inflorescence consists of burr-like clusters containing small seeds. These burrs are covered with bristles, which help the plant anchor in the soil and protect the seed from harsh environmental conditions.
From an agronomic perspective, Buffel grass thrives in well-drained sandy or loamy soils. It requires full sun exposure and is highly sensitive to waterlogging. Planting should be timed with the onset of the rainy season to allow the root system to establish. Periodic fertilization can significantly boost biomass production, although the plant is known for its ability to persist on nutrient-poor soils.
