Description
Cenchrus biflorus Roxb., commonly known as sandbur, is an annual grass species belonging to the Poaceae family. This crop is a classic example of xerophytic flora, possessing remarkable adaptability to extreme environmental conditions. In agricultural practice, it is often viewed as a valuable forage resource in arid regions, although in many parts of the world, it is classified as a persistent weed due to its sharp, prickly burs.
The native range of this plant includes tropical and subtropical regions across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. It thrives in arid savannas, sandy deserts, and semi-arid zones. The crop prefers environments with minimal rainfall where other grass species struggle to survive. Cenchrus is known to colonize disturbed lands, pastures, and roadsides, driven by its highly effective seed dispersal strategy.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by a well-developed root system and erect stems reaching heights of 50–70 cm. The most distinctive feature is its spike-like inflorescence, composed of spiny burs that easily attach to animal fur and clothing. These sharp spines pose a significant challenge for forage utilization, as the crop must be harvested at the correct vegetative stage before the burs harden and become inedible.
Cenchrus is exceptionally tolerant of diverse soil types, thriving even in poor, sandy, or rocky soils with low organic matter. Agronomic practices are minimal: seeding is typically conducted in warm, well-draining soil at the onset of the rainy season. The plant requires intense sunlight and is highly sensitive to waterlogging and shading, making it unsuitable for cultivation in temperate climates.
Agricultural and economic utility is primarily focused on two areas:
- Use as a forage crop during early growth stages when the burs are soft and palatable.
- Utilization in land reclamation projects to stabilize shifting sands and prevent soil erosion.
Regarding plant health, the crop is generally resilient to pathogens due to its coarse, fibrous structure. Typical pests include common grass-feeding insects, though the economic impact is usually minor. In intensive farming, the primary management challenge remains the control of seed spread, as the burs can remain viable in the soil seed bank for several seasons, complicating crop rotation cycles.
