Calanthe triplicata

Calanthe triplicata is a perennial terrestrial orchid belonging to the Orchidaceae family. It is widely recognized for its beautiful, snow-white flowers and its lush, pleated foliage, making it a prized specimen for botanical collections and specialized greenhouse cultivation.

The plant originates from the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, extending into Australia and various Pacific islands. In its native habitat, it thrives in damp, shaded forest floors, often found near water sources where humidity levels remain consistently high throughout the year.

Botanically, the species is characterized by its sympodial growth habit, featuring distinct pseudobulbs that store water and nutrients. Its leaves are broad, ribbed, and dark green, providing a striking contrast to the elegant spikes of white flowers that emerge during the blooming season, typically characterized by a distinct lip structure.

Successful cultivation requires environmental conditions that mimic a tropical forest floor. The soil should be a highly porous, humus-rich mix—often combining orchid bark, perlite, and peat—to ensure excellent drainage while maintaining moisture. Bright, indirect light is essential, as direct sunlight can easily scorch the foliage.

While primarily ornamental, the plant requires attentive care to remain healthy.
