Drooping Cassinia is an evergreen shrub belonging to the Asteraceae family. While it is a native plant in parts of the Southern Hemisphere, it is frequently classified as a problematic invasive weed in agricultural settings, specifically on degraded grazing lands where it can outcompete native pasture grasses.
The plant originates from Australia, where it is well-adapted to the continent's diverse and often harsh climates. It is commonly found in woodlands and open areas, thriving in environments where the topsoil has been disturbed or where overgrazing has reduced the competition from other plant species, allowing the shrub to establish dense colonies.
Botanically, it is recognized by its erect, woody stems and narrow, sticky leaves that emit a distinct aromatic scent when crushed. It typically grows up to two meters in height. The inflorescences consist of small, cream or yellowish flower heads clustered at the ends of branches, which produce large quantities of wind-dispersed seeds.
The environmental requirements of Drooping Cassinia are quite minimal, which explains its success as a colonizing species. It prefers well-drained, sandy or stony soils and is highly tolerant of drought conditions. The shrub is known for its fire-adapted nature, often regenerating rapidly after bushfires, which makes it a persistent challenge for land managers.
There is no standard agricultural production for this species. Its management is primarily focused on eradication or suppression to improve pasture quality. Control methods include mechanical removal, such as slashing or chaining, and the targeted application of herbicides. Integrated pest management strategies are often required to prevent the plant from re-establishing itself on vulnerable soil patches.
