The plant is native to the high-altitude regions of the Andes, particularly within the páramo ecosystems of Colombia and Ecuador. Growing in such extreme environments, the species has developed physiological adaptations to tolerate thin mountain air, high UV radiation, and volatile daily temperature shifts typical of tropical high-elevation zones.
