Nettle-leaved goosefoot (Chenopodiastrum murale) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Amaranthaceae family. Formerly classified within the Chenopodium genus, it has been reclassified into the Chenopodiastrum genus. This plant is widely recognized as a nitrophilous weed found in agricultural settings, gardens, and disturbed habitats.
The species is native to Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia but has achieved a cosmopolitan distribution. It thrives in temperate and subtropical climates, demonstrating a particular preference for soils with high nitrogen availability. In agricultural landscapes, it often invades row crops, vegetable fields, and orchards, where it benefits from fertilization and irrigation.
Botanically, the plant is distinguished by its upright, branched stem and leaves that have a characteristic rhombus shape with serrated, nettle-like margins. Small, greenish, hermaphrodite flowers are arranged in compact cymes or panicles. Its growth cycle is rapid, allowing the plant to set seeds quickly throughout the growing season.
